Updates - April 09

1. First off, I’d like to say sorry for the lack of updates for you, my gracious viewers(if there are any). I’ve been pretty busy with some other things so… yeah. 2. I haven’t had a comic for a while, mainly because I have been working on some videos and games recently and also, I just got a new illustratio programe and I need to get used to it. 3. I have been updating frequently on my youtube channel : http://www.youtube.com/christianainc and so for most updates for the next few weeks will be seen there. 4. Finally, I will stop blogging for a short period. A blog, afteral, is for expressing your views, thoughts, opinons or experiences with the world, and for me, the world appears to be empty. Nobody has looked here for weeks and so until some people do, there really is no point. I will continue to blog again once at least 5 people have commented here. I’m hoping that youtube will be an easy way to get more people to come here, but either way, videos are fun to make. So until then, I’m Christian Albrecht, thanks for reading!

grotuitous acts of violence

What is it about violence that people seem to love so much? I know heaps of people that just love to see blood and gore, but I don’t get it. They’re always like: “OH YEAH BLOOD IS AWESOME! DID YOU SEE THAT NEW MOVIE, THE BLOODY ZOOMBIE MASACRE OF BLOODY VIOLENCE AND GOORE!! It was soo great!” I just fail to see how excessive violence in movies or comics or games is attractive. I understand having it when it’s nessesary, but mostly it’s just grotuitous. thrown in there for the sake of it. I suppose I see it attracive in the sense of it being ‘forbidden’ to kids but still, why is it loved so? Look at Batman, it was a great movie and sure it had punching and so forth but no blood or anthying of the sort. why can’t other movies such as watchmen be like that? no blood. And I realise that blood was shown in the book. but really was it necessary? anyway enough of my rant that nonone will read. don’t do drugs kids!

Garfield

This is a post that was originally a journal entry on my DeviantArt page. I will post this now, because I’m quite busy and doubt I’ll have time to write a proper one.

Have a great easter everyone!

To my faithful friends and watchers,
As most of you knoaw, I am a very big garfield fan.

Since a very young age I have enjoyed the zany antics of the orange fat cat. And even now I still enjoy reading his strip daily. Over time, I have acummalaetd quite a lot of Garfield items and collectables, including an original sketch done by Jim Davis himself.

But thinking recently, has Garfield lost some of his touch? Is the strip starting to become a way of money? I am starting to think so. Don’t get me wrong, I still love Garfield and always will, but I think Garfield isn’t what he used to be.

Garfield has now really becomean income of money for Jim and the Paws group.
Jim himself, because of his age only does a sketch of the strip, but everything else, isn’t. The strip to me, is less funny now than what it was. It’s still pretty funny but not like it’s predesessors. I think it would have been better if they didn’t add lots of extra characters for one thing.

Now there’s also Liz, and the characters seem to go out ‘in the town’ much more. Jon was always meant to be a ‘hopeless’ man, one ‘without love’ a bachelor and one to stay.

But now they bring the characters out of their natural aurroundings and into the open. Just like with Frasier, when they added more characters when Nile’s and Daphne were going out, it was never as good.

I can imagine many of you not agreeing with me but, I always see Garfield as a ‘closed strip’ one that stays to it’s natural ways. And although I can understand that the writers find it hard and run out of ideas for a strip, and so they think that adding more characters would be the next logical step, i think maybe, just maybe not.

Last year, A Garfield CGI(computer Genereated Images) movie was released.
“Garfield Gets Real” : [link]
It was horrible. The plot was pretty bad, and although the concept was a good one, it just didn’t work. It was badly written.
So, Jim Davis has written the two Garfield movies, which were okay, but not great and a bad CGI movie. I would have thought he’d maybe see that he’s a good comic writer, or a good short animation writer, but not a movie writer.
But Oooh No!
He has to go and start another CGI movie, which doesn’t look very good.
Garfield: FunFest: [link]

It seems like he’s really doing to get money from it now, not from the love of the actual cartoon. That’s another reason why I suport ‘cult comics’ so highly. The creator enters into the dark realm of comics, probabaly already knowing that their ‘cult comic’ won’t do to well. Some people may like it and he may have quite a few fans, but no where near to the extent of Garfield, or Peanuts. They do it purely for the love of making the comics. Not for the money.

It’s a shame to see such a good comic like Garfield to go on that path.

In 3 days from today, Garfield will be 30. Yep, he’s been around for 30 years.
Every year I celebrate Garfield’s birthday and do ‘Garfield related things.
And I’ll continue to for my whole life, unless of course my future wife demands me to stop playing with my old Garfield figurines.

As I said earlier, I am a big Garfield fan. I love him and will continue to.
I just think that Jim Davis and associates have made Garfield an item, not a cartoon.

Seeing as I’ve been quite busy this week, I thought I’d talk a little more in depth about G-G.
As you probably already know, G-G is a webcomic, which takes garfield comics(that have Jon), and then erases garfield, leaving Poor Jon to himself. The result is a hilariously poignant cartoon, showing the sad, lonely life of Jon Arbuckle. The strip above is a perfect example, f what types of things go on in the strip. Syre, this one doesn’t show the slight poignancy of the comic, but it’s still quite a funny strip that gives a basic outline.
A lot of the time, G-G actually shows that garfield isn’t always needed for the comic. He usually has some final ‘witty’ comment that is the punchline, but looking at G-G, garfield doesn’t actually add much. Infact the comic is probably sometimes better without him! That’s not to say that regualr Garfield doesn’t have it’s highs either. There are among the gems of G-G, some that just don’t work. You read it and think ‘Boy, how unfunny, too bad that this doesn’t have Garfield in it!’ Just as in Garfield, not all comics have a ‘worthless’ garfield. Many still either have some very funny comment by Garfield which makes the strip or, the strip completely revolves around Garfield, and excludes Jon. These are the G strips that shine.
All in All, Garfield minus Garfield is a very original, funny webcomic which you must read, even if you’re not a Garfield fan. Go to it!

Picks of the week

I have actually known about this video for some time now. It’s just plain awesome! The dancing, especially, strikes me. The moves look really cool, they are what I could say ‘the freshest move I’ve ever seen’. The music is good and the dance is unique, the end has a nice twist, this is one heck of a video. That’s not to say that it’s all great. The volumptuous woman who keeps appearing in slow motion every now and then is pointless. Now don’t go and say I’m crazy, but really, sure she looks good, but it just isn’t suited to the rest of the clip. The rest is snazzy and has style but this just wrecks what would of been a perfect clip. It’s almost like the directors wanted to include his wife, or thought it neccessary to have a big breasted woman to make it appeal to a younger audience.

My favourite game - The Cardigans

This is a song by the Cardigans, a very good music group. Their songs may take a little getting used to, but once you start, you’ll love them. The Cardigans have better songs than this but for now this one makes the pick of the week.

Website of the week: http://www.garfieldminusgarfield.net

This truly is a great site. Heaps of garfield strips, without garfield in them! It shows Jon and what a sad lonely person he really is.poor Jon.

Welcome to the new site

Hi there friend, welcome to my new site!

As you can see, this is a blog. Above are links to all of my other sites that I post stuff at. I’m changing things a bit see. Instead of posting at heaps of different places, I’m just going to be posting any updates here, and then you can check them out with one of the links above.

So this is how my blog will work: I will usually post 3 times a week, sometimes less, sometimes more. Those 3 post will be in 1 of 3 catagories. The first is a regualr update. This is a post where I notify Mr. Internet here, about a new comic animation, ect. The next is a Pick of the week. This is where I post any cool new sites, music, videos, ect that I have found (and give an opinion about it). Finally, I have an opinon/story post. This I will talk about something that has recenly happened to me, or my opinon on something.

So there, now that I’ve said everything, tune in each week for more updates!

cult classic games...

Okay, I know  haven’t posted in a while, I know you all hate me, but here I am, to post my slightly synical views about everything.

Yesterday, I went to the VYT drama class year break up. Whilst there, somehow the subject of ‘The Neverhood’ came up. And it just so turns out that Hamish too is a fan of the cult classic game. So we got talking about it and it was able to recindle my loving interest in cult games from the 1990s, the neverhood being one of them. So, join me now in my top 3 cult classic games from the 90’s. Only one game per franchise.

NUMBUH 3:

Sam & Max hit the road.

Now this is a great third person point and click adventure from LucasArts. The company also made such memorable titles such as the monkey island series and Day of the tentacle. The game is basically about Sam and max, a crime fighting duo, who go across the country trying to find the circus’ Bruno the bigfoot. Later, LucasArts was going to release a sequal in full 3D, but close to completion, it was canned. Soon after a group of programmers and animators from LucasArts, brokeaway and formed their own company: Telltale games. Telltale, ended up releasing many ‘episodic’ games for Sam and Max and some are still on the way. But anyway, I’m here to talk about hit the road, as it is lesser know and harder to obatin than any of the others.

Hit the road, is like your usual 3rd person point and click adventure. You point some where, the characters can either move there, or interact someway with it, whether it be talk to, pick up or use. Like many PaC games, item combining is very often used. that is once you collect a whole crap load of items you need to combine some of them to make new ones, for example, you need to join a severed hand, broken golf ball retreiver and and a magnet to make an extending magnet to grabe metallic objects far away. This type of logic can at first be a little frustrating as you never know exacly what to do, but you end up getting used to it.

In hit the road has great humor and good voice acting and that is the best thing about it. Throught the game, basically everything you click has some funny outcome, whether it be talking to someone or just examining and item.

NUMBUH 2

Oddworld: Abes Exodus

Every Oddworld game, not including the final game Stranger’s wrath, was a 2D puzzle platformer(with 3d cutscenes). That is, the gameplay is the same as a platformer(with some additions) and it has different puzzles and tasks for you to complete throught the game. The biggest difference between one of these Oddworld games and other paltformers is character interaction. In the game, you must save your fellow mudokons(your species) and to do that you can get them to do a number of tasks like, follow you, work, wait, and so on.

The reason that I chose this game rather than Abe’s oddysee, the previous game or Much’s Oddysee, the next game is because the I prefer exodus to abe’s oddysee. I think overal everything about it is better in exodus, and then much’s oddysee is probably a little too known for this list.

The game sees Abe arrive from his journey in the previous game, but after a small accident(fall of a small cliff), finds himself in a dream-like state, some spirit mudokons come to him and explain that the same group of villians from the previous game are getting blind mudokon slaves to dig up mudokon(say mudokon 10 times over) graves and then are stealing their  bones for a new product of theirs. Abe, when he come to his concious self explains to vereyone what he saw and then him and a few others set off for ‘soul storm brewery’…

In the game you have no attacks, but rather can  use bombs that you pick up or can trick an enemy into falling into a trap or something. You can also chant, and take control of an enemy, which is really cool! All those other enemies thats you hated, you can kill ‘em with the controlled one. And after you’ve killed all the others, you hit the chant button and then the controlled enemy explodes! with some exceptions mind you.

And finally, NUMBUH 1!!!

The NeverhoOd

This was the game that I first mentioned. It is a 3rd person point and click game, but with a twist. It’s all done in claymation! Everything, all scenery, characters and graphics are made with klay(clay is always spelt with a k in the game).

The game is littered with quirkyness and bizarre things. They have odd-logic puzzles and intriguing cuts scenes, it’s just so great!

When you first start the game, you know nothing. That’s right nothing. You don’t know who you are, why you’re there or what you’re supposed to do. You just start. This may sound dumb, but reall,y it’s not. Slowly as you go through the game, you slowly discover more and more, and why there’s nobody ever around and what you have to do!

The story is similar to that of the bible. There was creation, and then there was life. That sorta thing. The game is a cult classic and if you play it, you’ll understand why…

Surprisingly, it’s hard for me to think of what else to say about the Neverhood. It’s really something you must experience for yourself!

Now go play these games!

Music 'o mine

People gazing at my bright ipod screen, browsing my menus. Although they don’t actually ask me, you can see on their face ‘What the hell is all of this? What’s Dead can Dance? Who’s Philip Glass? And what happened to all of the good songs like Justin Timberlake, Pink, Madonna and The Plain whie Ts?

My selection of music is rather different to the average kid my age. Instead of all the new pop, and ‘cool’ songs, I choose a slightly different genre (whith some exceptions). I tend to choose songs with a little more meaning, or that are at least ‘different’. Some songs I have are old, some are semi classical, some even a type of chant. I know I probably sound like a grumpy old person complaining about the songs these days, and then remonising about the music from his time, but really, most modern singles are a dime a dozen. Most don’t have much meaning, and are bad dance tunes. The following are a few artists or bands whom I like:

Cat Stevens

Philip Glass

Dead Can Dance

Tom Waits

Deep Forest

Terry Taylor

Michael Bross

and there are others. I do mind you like some of the new music, like U2, One Republic, Nical Back, JT, Pink, and I like a few selected songs from others. Before I end my post, I should give you this link. It’s a vidoe of Tom Waits’ ‘I don’t wanna grow up’, my favourite song. At first it may seem unappealing, but listen to it for a while, and pay attention to the lyrics. You’ll understand why I like it.

His Dark Materials trillogy

Yesterday, I finished the final book in the ‘His Dark Materials’ trillogy, the amber spyglass. And I can tell you it was one of the most amazing books that I have read. The three books in the series were ‘Northern Lights’, ‘The Subtle Knife’ and you guessed it, ‘The Amber Spyglass’. You also may know northern lights under the name of the golden compass, a disasterous movie of the book.

This series is probably the best that I have ever read. Better than Harry Potter, better than A Series of Unfortunate Events, and dare I even say possibly better than Lord of the Rings? Every book was much better than the last, AS (Amber Spyglass) being the best.

The problem with Philip Pullman’s writing is, although undoubtedly good, he always seems to have somewhat sad endings. The following text contains spoilers!

At the end of the first book, Lyra’s friend Roger dies, at the end of no. 2, Lyra gets kidnapped, and Will’s(a new character) father gets killed. And probably the most sad was the final book, where Lyra and Will had found a very deep love for one another, only to find that they had to be seperated and never see each other again. Although in my words, it doesn’t seem very sad, in the words of Pullman, it is exteremly so. I even found myself shed a tear. Anyway, as sad as it is, I think that it was a perfect ending for the trillogy, unlike some other book series, *coughHarryPottercough*.

The ‘His Dark Materials’ trillogy is a masterpiece of litrature, truly a classic. If you haven’t read the books, I’d advise you to, if you haven’t seen the movie, I’d advise you not to see it, it just makes you expectation and view on the books lower.
